Adding Snaps to the Crotch of the Elysian Bodysuit

Hey everyone - Stephanie (@stephaniemdecker) here! I love a good bodysuit, especially now that they’re so popular and the Elysian is no exception! While this is definitely one of the quicker sews you can make up for yourself, we wanted to make sure we wrote up a blog post on how to make this basic a bit more accessible and restroom-friendly by adding snaps!

Since the Elysian has a ⅜”[1cm] seam allowance, the first thing we’re going to want to do is add a bit more length to both the front and back crotch to give us enough room to stabilize and add in our snaps!

In order to make this as versatile and comfortable in all, I want to outline two different ways in which you can add your snaps: Using Interfacing and Using Grosgrain Ribbon. For this instance we’ll be using 10mm snaps.

Interfacing

You’ll want to add some additional length to your crotch as we want to make sure we have enough room to interface the tabs and ensure that we can fit our snaps in comfortably and stably. For our 10mm snap purposes, we’ll make sure to add 1½”[3.8cm] to each end.

Cut matching lengths of interfacing to fit the 1⅞”[4.8cm] length on either side and interface the wrong side of the crotch.

Fold the length in half, making sure that the interfacing matches up and sew across the lengths to secure the tab and create a strong, reinforced seam for the snaps. Edgestitch along the folded edge.

When completing the legs holes of the bodysuit, we have a bit of editing to do! You’ll want to take your Leg Bindings (H) and add ⅜”[1cm] to each end for a total of ¾”[2cm] and cut out the new lengths.

Fold the Binding pieces in half lengthwise RST, sewing the shorter ends at ⅜”[1cm]. Turn right side out and finish the leg holes as you would normally, sewing RST and lining up the ends with the edges of the crotch seam.

Mark the locations where your snaps will go, positioning them roughly ⅓ and ⅔ of the way across the tab and either sew them on or secure them to the bodysuit with your fastening pliers.

Grosgrain Ribbon

Fold under your crotch’s ⅜”[1cm] seam allowance and sew it down using a zigzag or stretch stitch, wrong sides together on the front, RST on the back.

Just like the Interfacing option, you’ll want to take your Leg Bindings (H) and add ⅜”[1cm] to one end and cut out the new lengths.

Fold the Binding pieces in half lengthwise RST, sewing each end at ⅜”. Turn right side out and finish the leg holes as you would normally, sewing RST and lining up the ends with the edges of the crotch seam.

Cut two identical lengths of your ¾”[2cm] gross-grain ribbon, enough to fit comfortably across the width of the crotch of your bodysuit and leg binding plus an additional ½”[1.3cm] for seam allowance.

Prepare your ribbon by pressing the ends in ¼” on each end. Edgestitch the ribbon and trim the excess. Place the ribbon pieces along the edge of the crotch, making sure the raw edges of the ribbon are concealed against the bodysuit and edgestitch all the way around. Repeat with both lengths.

Mark the locations where your snaps will go, positioning them roughly ⅓ and ⅔ of the way across the tab and either sew them on or secure them to the bodysuit with your fastening pliers.

And voila! A more accessible and restroom-friendly bodysuit in two different versions depending on your preferred materials! Have another preferred way to add them? Let us know below!
