When we launched our Dew Top and Dress pattern, we had lots of questions about making it with sleeves! The good news is, this hack is really easy to do, and you can use our pay what you can pattern The Friday Bateau to help achieve the sleeve version. Continue reading to find out how.
What you need:
- The Dew Top and Dress Pattern
- The Friday Bateau Pattern
- Knit fabric of your choice
- Pattern paper or some scrap paper is fine
- Tape, scissors and a ruler
- Usual sewing supplies: sewing machine, stretch needle, thread
Pattern Amends
We are going to use the Friday Bateau Sleeve (piece C) as our sleeve for this project, and in order to use it the Dew Top (or dress depending on what you're making) pieces need to be modified slightly around the armscye to match the sleeve armscye piece.
Lay your Dew front A flat, and then lay your Bateau Front A on top, matching up the top edge of the shoulder seam at the armscye.
As you can see the side seam on the Bateau is slightly smaller, draw a line on your Dew piece to match, which grades off the corner of the piece slightly. Also, attach a piece of scrap or pattern paper behind the Dew piece, so you can add that extra edge of the armscye. Add all the notches from the Bateau onto the Dew piece.
Repeat the process for the Dew back piece B, laying a piece of pattern or scrap paper behind it and taping together with washee tape. Then lay the Bateau piece B on top, and then draw/trace the armscye of the bateau onto the Dew (drawing on the paper stuck behind it, as this is extending the armscye out). As you can see by the photo the Dew has a much wider opening, so this needs to be made smaller to match the bateau so that the sleeve will fit it. Make sure to draw on the notch lines.
Cut out your fabric in the same way with your pieces on the fold, and then cut 2 sleeve pieces.
Sewing Steps:
Sew together the neck opening for the Dew in the same way as the instructions, and once that is done the sleeves are attached in the same style as the Bateau instructions.
Lay the top right side facing up, and then match up your sleeve (and notches) right rights together across the armscye and shoulder. Pin all the way across, and then sew with a 1cm seam allowance. Repeat this for both sleeves.
Fold right sides together, and pin down the sleeve seam, match up the underarm, and then continue to pin down the side seam matching up the front and back. Stitch this in one go with a 1cm seam allowance, pivoting at the underarm seam.
That is it! Such a simple hack, but it means the Dew Top and Dress is suitable for those who like a sleeve! The perfect layering top under dungarees, pinafore dresses, or styled under jumpers. I love this bright pop of pink but you could have fun making this in so many other fabrics like mesh, or stretch velvet.
