I recently sewed for 30 minutes a day for 30 days just to see what would happen. I had practical ambitions with carving out time to sew for myself but I was also curious how it would feel to have a consistent creative practice. I have read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron several times and I always get excited to start doing deep creative work and then it falls by the wayside after a couple weeks. I really loved the process and it is something I have continued past the 30 days. In this blog post I'm talking through the process of how I managed to carve out that time, perfect if you're looking to set yourself new years resolution that focuses on creativity.
The creativity that is a part of my job is certainly rewarding but it isn’t the same as the type of creativity that leads to internal exploration and expression, that I also crave.
For me, a creative practice is having a regular routine that allows for both making things and intentionally exploring creativity.
I find that the most important thing is getting the ball rolling. Sewing for 30 minutes a day is what I have time for and can consistently achieve. It's just enough of a nudge to start moving.
One of my major goals for 2025 is to do more enriching, offline activities that are more for my own internal joy and well being rather than for external validation or achievements. I know that for me, engaging in creativity every day makes me happy. If you have a similar goal below are some tips for you.
PLANNING
Planning for how you will be able to have a creative practice is important. Where in your space (or outside of it) are you going to do your work? What time of day? How will you carve out the time.
GOAL SETTING
How do you want to feel? How do you picture yourself after a year of successfully having a creative practice? What do you want to accomplish?
UNLOCKING
What has stopped you from being creative in the past? What value does a creative practice hold for you? What roadblocks can you remove?
Hopefully after taking that time to reflect on the above points you will head into this new year with resolutions that are consistent, achievable, and cultivate creative practises that is just for you and your joy.
