Swishy skirts are a great go to garment for summer, and this season there seems to be an abundance of gingham gathered tier skirts. In this blog post we show you how to use the Davenport Dress Sewing Pattern to create a gathered tier skirt that has pockets! It's such an easy sewing hack, and perfect if you're looking to create a skirt in this style. It also has the added value of side pockets, making it practical and look elevated compared to the more simple rectangular panelled gathered skirts.
What you will need:
- The Davenport Dress Sewing Pattern
- Elastic for the waistband: I used 1" elastic.
- Your usual sewing notions and tools
Pattern hack and modifications:
The modifications are really simple, you need to omit the top half of the dress and then create a simple waistband for the elasticated channel.
Pattern pieces you need:
- Back skirt N
- Front Skirt H
- Pocket Pieces J and I
- and Skirt Panel O
To do this, all you need to do is measure the back skirt panel N at the waist in your size, and double it to create a long rectangle, add 1cm seam allowance at the short sides, and make sure the channel is double your elastic plus seam allowance. See the digram below. My piece to fit a 1inch elastic measures 2 inches plus half an inch on each side. This piece gets folded wrong side together, and the un-folded edge gets sewn to the waist to create a waistband for the elastic.

Steps:

Start by following the sewing steps to add the pockets and pocket facings to the skirt front.

Sew the front and back skirt together, and the short end of your created waist band, and finish the seams.

Fold the waist band wrong side together matching up the long edge, pin the waist ban the raw edge side to the edge of the waist of the front and back. Pin the short edge of the waist to the center back of the back skirt piece. Sew around the waist band but leave a 2 inch opening at the back, this hole allows us to put in the elastic.

Cut your elastic to fit around your waist, and note the 2 ends will be overlapped and sewn together. Thread in the elastic through the waist channel until both ends are out, overlap and stitch them together. Pin the hole of the waist band, and sew it closed.
Finish the seam by pulling the elastic so it lays flat as you stitch.
Add the gathered skirt tier as per the instructions, and hem the bottom.
Finished Skirt:
