The Sunny Dress Pattern is a super versatile pattern that can be cut as a dress, top, and SKIRT! That's right, make an entire wardrobe of Sunny garments. Hacking the pattern into a skirt is pretty simple.
- On your dress front piece, starting at the side seam where the line indicating to cut the pattern as a top is, draw a straight line across your pattern piece. Repeat on back piece.
- Using the lines you drew in, cut out your front and back skirt pieces.
- Right sides together, stitch your front piece to your back piece at side seams.
- Try your skirt on and make sure you like where it is sitting on your hips before you draft your waistband. If you need to cut it lower, do so now. Keep in mind the waistband is about 1.5" tall.
- Once you like where it is sitting, measure the top opening of your skirt. Subtract 1.5", this will be the length of your waistband.
- The pictured skirt has a 1.5" finished waistband, so the pattern piece is 4.26" wide by the length that you found in the last step. If you want a wider or narrower waistband, you can adjust that in this step.
- Right sides together, stitch the ends of your waistband together, make it into a loop.
- Fold your waistband in half, right side out, and press.
- Pin your waistband to your skirt, right sides together. You will have to gently pull on your waistband as you sew to stretch it to the same width as the waist opening of your skirt.
- Hem your skirt following the instructions in the pattern.
